The Key to Success

On the way to church this morning my husband and I were talking about a movie we had watched the day before about Mr. Rogers–I happen to be big fan. I loved watching Mr. Rogers when I was a child and also watched it with my own boys when they were young.

As my husband and I watched the movie, we learned that Mr. Rogers spent a lot of time as a child sick in bed, which caused him to use his imagination to entertain himself. I chewed on this until we were on our way to church, when I randomly announced to my husband that I believe it’s the things that happen to us in life that develop character. It truly is our response to circumstances that makes us who we are.

Do we give up and think the world is against us, or do we rise to the occasion and become stronger?

It’s our response that determines the outcome and how we view the world around us. Our response builds our character. This isn’t the first time I’ve said something like this, but watching this movie reminded me once again that our response can be the key to success or the key to failure.

What do you think?

Let’s work this week to respond to trials in a manner that will cause positive growth.

I agree with this wholeheartedly! I know people who suffer from chronic ailments and some of them, the whole world knows how awful they feel all the time. And others, no one around would know other than prayer requests, because they have chosen to not allow their circumstances to rule their lives or attitudes.

This is one of the reasons I cling to Philippians 4:4-9. When we strive to follow these instructions, it can transform our lives!

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice! Let everyone see your gentleness. The Lord is near! Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things. And what you learned and received and heard and saw in me, do these things. And the God of peace will be with you.
